著者は18世紀力学史の古典的研究で知られる人物で、本業は数理物理学者。
この論考は力学の歴史を一般向け(この場合は主に物理・数学の専門家向けということになると思うが)に書いたもので、注も参考文献も一切ついていないのだが、著者がどういう歴史観を持っていたかを知るには便利な内容になっている。

この構成だけ見ても分かるが、ふつう想像される力学の歴史とは少し(もしくはかなり)異なる見方がされている。すぐに思いつく限りで、注意しておきたいのは次の諸点。
・連続体(弾性体や流体)の力学と熱力学を包摂する形で力学史が考えられている
・ラグランジュやハミルトンなど、いわゆる「解析力学」の流れが概して低評価
(ヤコビに至っては名前すら出てこない)
・力学に貢献した人物としては、一番がオイラー、二番がコーシーとされる
この人の仕事はいわゆるホイッグ史観の見本ではないかと思うわけで、そのことについてだけで一つ論考が書けそうな気がしている。単に批判の対象にするということではなく、そこから何が得られるかを考えるための材料にするという意味で。
